Everest Base Camp Duration : 21 Days
Grade : Demanding - 5

Everest base camp trekking is one of the classic trekking in Nepal. The trek to Everest Base Camp (5364m) is without doubt one of the most famous trekking in the world. We follow an ancient route that will take us through tiny villages, across high mountain passes and through remote valleys, villages and monasteries.

People who have fully acclimatized may trek to the Everest Base Camp but without doubt, for many people the main highlight will be the magnificent views which unfold from the summit of Kalapathar - the extraordinary ice sculptures of the Khumbu Glacier, Nuptse and the south-west face of Everest itself.

Fitness

Taking part calls on some determination and stamina and we rely on the camaraderie created. The conditions, when the weather turns unfavorable, can be arduous, however the demands should not be exaggerated. If you are of average fitness and enjoy the outdoors you should manage well.

Trekking Weather

September, October, November and most of December are excellent ‘picture perfect’ months. The Christmas and New Year period - even though already cold (freezing temperature at 3,000m and above) – is quite ideal. January to mid-February are great for winter trekking - icy morning, clear day, cold night, bright new moon. The usually crowded Everest tea-houses are quite empty and their people have time to chat. The spring season - March, April & May, days longer, sun warmer and the glorious rhododendrons are coming into full bloom.

The Himalaya, not being Disney World, delivers the real thing. Let no one have you suppose that all and always it is an azure blue, above the cloud, sun blessed idyll. You may well get to see avalanches and electric storms and not get to see two meters in front of your face - clearly the organization and the team need to be prepared.

Health and Altitude

A comprehensive first-aid kit is carried. Senior staff are also trained to prevent, detect and, if necessary, to deal with AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). Contrary to popular hype, AMS is not common - at least not on well-paced treks. However, on our higher ascents in Everest region the trek is equipped with a PAC (Portable Altitude Chamber). This inflatable, tube-shaped, pressurized, windowed bag creates low-altitude air pressure conditions. A trekker’s one or two hour ‘stay’ can be sufficient response. However, sometimes the patient will need to descend, with an escort, at least 1000m to more comfortable conditions.
